The powerful (and super-powerful) of this world are usually at the centre of baroque opera plots. George Frideric Handel's three-act opera Alessandro, which the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie is staging in cooperation with the ETA Hoffmann Theater Bamberg, is no exception: none other than Alexander the Great is at the centre of the (fictional) plot, in which two princesses vie for the favour of the legendary general. The fact that the premiere in 1725 featured Francesca Cuzzoni and Faustina Bordoni, two of the most famous prima donnas of their time, in the leading roles, is hard to ignore: The work is captivating with numerous bravura arias that continue to thrill audiences to this day.
